Lothar, Mathematiker, * Arnsberg (Westfalen) 6. 7. 1910; wirkte in Karlsruhe, ab 1943 als Professor in Hannover und von 1952 an in Hamburg, wo er das Institut für Angewandte Mathematik gründete. Collatz gilt als einer der bedeutendsten Vertreter der numerischen Mathematik. Er arbeitete neben der numerischen Analysis zur Funktionalanalysis, zur Theorie der Differenzial- und Integralgleichungen, zur Approximationstheorie und untersuchte und andere Optimierungsaufgaben, Bifurkationen und periodische Splinfunktionen. Collatz schrieb zahlreiche bedeutende Monographien.
